PURPOSE: YDPP helps people with pre-diabetes or at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes reduce their risk through modest lifestyle changes.  Research shows meeting the program goals of the YDPP reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by more than half.

Participants must be over 18 years of age and have a BMI of 25 or greater.  Risk factors for diabetes include: family history of Type 2 diabetes, diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy, physically active less than two days per week, and age greater than 45.  Program includes 12-week household membership to the YMCA for those who are not current members.

Participants meet as a small group for 16 weeks, led by a certified YMCA lifestyle coach.  During the sessions they learn how to make healthier food choices, how to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routine, and how to manage a healthy weight. After the initial sessions, participants meet monthly for added support.  Participants may bring one support person to class sessions.

Accepting new participants until four weeks after first class.  Program fee applies: payment plan and sliding scale available for qualifying participants.  Grant funding available to qualifying participants in some areas.  YMCA membership not required.  Childcare is available for classes held during regular Child Watch hours in participating locations.  Spanish-speaking instructors available in some locations.

United Healthcare members should call (800) 237-4942 to see if you qualify for program fee coverage.  Medicare members can be placed on a waiting list for program fee coverage to begin soon!
