The Hendricks County Convention and Visitors Bureau (HCCVB) announced the results of the 2011 Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism for Hendricks County Study conducted by Certec, Inc. out of Lexington, KY earlier this week. The study measures the economic impact of visitor spending in the county’s lodging facilities, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Visitors spent $219.3 million in Hendricks County in 2011, an increase of 3.7% annually (as adjusted for inflation) from 2009. From 2007 to 2009 that same figure rose 3.3%. Visitors to the destination topped 2.1 million, with an additional 453,700 pass-through visits which generated 3.1 million participant days when the number of days staying in Hendricks County was taken into account.

Those visits generated more than $51.6 million in tax revenues to the government including $10.2 million locally in Hendricks County. It also generated nearly $46.8 million in wages for 2,879 jobs in the county hospitality industry.

“We know that visitors to Hendricks County have a great impact on our local economy,” said Jaime Bohler Smith, associate director for the HCCVB. “This industry is a job provider in our community. If those 2,879 jobs were in one company, we would be the third largest employer in Hendricks County.”

In addition to the steady increases in spending and revenue, the study revealed a shift in some of the activities visitors choose to experience when they come to the community. For the first time ever, two new attractions showed in the study including visiting an art museum and swimming. These two growth areas can be attributed to enhanced arts and cultural offerings in Hendricks County including the development of the Rural Routes to Main Street Cultural Trail and the enhanced marketing efforts of family recreation destinations such as Splash Island Family Water Park at the Plainfield Recreation Center.
