• Hendricks County approves new drug court fees

    September 28, 2011 No comments

Hendricks County Commissioners formally approved an ordinance setting fees for a new drug court at their Tuesday meeting.

The program – led by a team that includes personnel from the county prosecutor’s office as well as mental health, substance abuse, and law enforcement representatives – targets high-risk offenders and is a last stop before prison.

Judge Mark Smith of Hendricks Superior Court 4, who’s spearheading the initiative, told commissioners when introducing the idea last month that it’s not designed for first-time offenders, but those who have a chronic history of drug abuse.

The fees commissioners approved include a $100 problem-solving court administration fee, a $50 monthly user fee, and $5 for each urine screening. Those fees will be collected like with those who are on probation.

Smith previously told the commissioners he doesn’t anticipate the drug court needing any local funding or additional staff. He expects most of the funding to come from user fees and federal grants. For now he’s using county probation fees as seed money.
