A former Marion County Sheriff’s deputy faces burglary and theft charges after police say he stole prescription pain killers from a friend’s home.

33 year old Douglas Tibbs quit his job amid the investigation. He’s accused of taking hydromorphone pills from a friend’s home.

Tibbs was arrested at his attorney’s office Thursday. He faces two counts of burglary, one count of theft, and one count of possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being held at the Arrestee Processing Center.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Tibbs told investigators that while he was visiting a friend’s home, he secretly unlocked the front door, knowing that the friends would not be home later. He allegedly later returned through the unlocked door and took some of the pills.

Tibbs told police he was addicted to controlled substances after taking Vicodin for post-surgery pain. At the time of the alleged theft, Tibbs did not have a valid prescription for any controlled substance.

Tibbs resigned Tuesday from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
