The Syracuse Chiefs’ offense stole six bases and scored multiple runs in the third, fourth, fifth and ninth innings to earn a 11-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Monday night at Victory Field.

Before Syracuse rallied for the come-from-behind victory, the Indians’ offense opened the contest with a bang when LF Kevin Melillo hit the second pitch from Chiefs’ starter Erik Arnesen out to right field for his eighth home run of the season and a quick 1-0 advantage. The Tribe then took a two-run edge one inning later when 2B Brian Friday scored from third base on a wild pitch.

The Chiefs tied the game in the top of the third on a two run homer by Seth Bynum but the Indians would once again regain the lead with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a Jason Jaramillo RBI single.

Syracuse later erased its one-run deficit in quick fashion when the Chiefs’ offense plated three runs in the fourth, before tacking on two more in the fifth to take a 7-3 advantage.

Indianapolis pulled to within three runs of Syracuse on John Bowker’s second home run in a Tribe uniform in the fifth, but the Chiefs regained their four-run cushion with a single score in the top of the seventh inning.

Syracuse put the contest out of reach in the top of the ninth when Danny Espinosa collected his first hit of the evening, a three-run blast to deep right center field.

Indians’ starter Joe Martinez was strapped with his first loss of the season after allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings of work, while Chiefs’ RHP Erik Arnesen improved his record to 5-7 on the season despite giving up four runs in five innings of work.

With the loss, Indianapolis falls to 62-62 on the season.

Following an off-day, Indianapolis hits the road for three games against the Toledo Mud Hens beginning on Wednesday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Tribe has yet to announce a starting pitcher, while LHP Charlie Furbush is the probable starter for the Mud Hens.
