• Flag Football Fund-raiser to Showcase Former Colts Football Players

    October 07, 2013 No comments

A number of former Indianapolis Colts players including Jeff Saturday and Gary Brackett will descend on a small football field in Danville for a flag football tournament and family event that is open and free to the public.

The Indiana Hurricanes Celebrity Flag Football Tournament fund-raiser organized by former Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi and his wife, Lana, will begin at 10 a.m., Oct. 19 at the Danville Youth Football Field behind Ellis Park in Danville.

“I love to have the ability to coordinate something like this that not only serves as a fund-raiser but benefits the entire community,” said Sorgi, who coaches his son’s 8U team. “I would love to do this every year and keep it locally here in Hendricks County to not just help our team but the entire Hurricanes baseball organization.”

The Indiana Hurricanes Baseball Organization was founded in 2010 and includes teams for children age 8 through 16 on the west side of Indianapolis. Sorgi estimates that the league and its families, who are mostly from Hendricks County and western Marion County, have to raise at least $900 a player annually to fund the travel, equipment, tournament fees and other expenses.

He said some families considered not having their children try out for the league because of the financial commitment, which led him and his wife to come up with this Celebrity Flag Football event to help ease that burden.

The Indiana Hurricanes 8U baseball team already has commitments from former Colts including Sorgi, Brackett, Saturday, Ryan Diem, Eric Foster, Marlin Jackson, Justin Snow, Hunter Smith, John Standeford, Joe Staysniak and David Thornton, as well as former Indiana Pacers player Fred Jones to not only appear at the event, but play, coach or serve as captain on every team that signs up.

The event is free for all spectators, and there will be many family-friendly activities including:

    • A kids’ zone featuring multiple bounce houses and carnival games in which a $2 wristband can get children all-day play.

    • Designated autograph sessions in which the Hurricane Baseball team will sell T-shirts that the professional athletes will sign.

    • Raffles for amazing sports memorabilia including autographed jerseys of Andrew Luck and Reggie Wayne, a Tony Dungy autograph collection, Colts tickets, select gift baskets and more.

    • $5 meal deals that will include, pizza, subs and wings from Rock Star Pizza in Brownsburg and Pizza Paradise in Danville.

    • Beer truck provided by Sun King Brewery.

    • Entertainment from the flag football games in which Anthony Calhoun from WISH-TV will serve as the master of ceremonies and live music with a disc jockey.

A few spots still remain for flag football teams. Teams must consist of 10 players who are 18 or older. Entry fee per team is $300 and includes a cinch bag, T-shirt and other goodies.
