• First-ever Iron Eagle Paddle & Run set for May 11 at Eagle Creek Park

    April 24, 2013 No comments

The Eagle Creek Park Foundation will host the inaugural Iron Eagle Paddle & Run, a 14k multi-sport race and fundraiser, on Saturday, May 11 at Eagle’s Crest in Eagle Creek Park, 7201 Fishback Road, on Indianapolis’ northwest side.

Participants of all ages can venture through one of the nation’s largest city-owned parks, by land and water, alternating between trail runs and 1.25-mile canoe, kayak or rowboat legs.

“The park is a playground for athletes,” said Michael Davis, vice president of the Eagle Creek Park Foundation. “It’s the perfect place to merge sports in a challenge that Indy’s never seen before.”

The race format starts at the Eagle’s Crest and consists of a 1.25-mile trail run to boats, 1.25-mile paddle to the Eagle Creek Park beach, 5k trail run, 1.25-mile paddle back to the westside, and 1.25-mile trail run back to the Crest.

“In an effort to protect the park, we’re keeping the course as natural as possible,” Davis said. Without the threat of extreme obstacles, he said, “we just leave the battle against nature up to you.”

Competitors have the choice to enter as an individual or team in 3 divisions: kayak (1-or 2-person), canoe (2- or 3-person), or single/double sculling rowboat (1- or 2-person). Racers will need to bring their own kayak, canoe or rowboat. Life jackets are required by all participants.

Post-race festivities include an award ceremony, Nicey Treat and Byrne’s Grilled Pizza food trucks, and adult beverages.

Cost is $55 before May 1, and $65 from May 1 through day of race. Entry includes a performance T-shirt and downloadable post-race photos.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Eagle Creek Park Foundation to help fund current projects like directional signage and trail markers, raptor training for naturalists, as well as the Crest restoration and Earth Discovery Center gift shop.

    Check-in is 8 a.m. day of race. Start time is 9 a.m.

To register, call Planet Adventure at 324-8299 or log on planetadventurerace.com. For more information on how to volunteer for the race, contact Glenna Haberzetle at 327-7148.
