Two people were killed when two tractor-trailers crashed in Vigo County on Wednesday.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 12 mile marker.

Police said 33 year old Rene M. Rodriguez of Arizona, who was hauling a trailer loaded with seafood, had slowed for construction when his vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer loaded with produce.

The produce truck burst into flames, trapping the driver and passenger inside the cab. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said, “The victims were entrapped in the wreckage, deceased, for 90 minutes as their recovery was hampered by the tremendous crush damage and subsequent fire.”.

Autopsies to identify the victims were scheduled for Thursday.

Rodriguez was not seriously injured in the crash.
