The New York Liberty extended their franchise-record winning streak to nine, beating the Indiana Fever 78-57 Tuesday at Madison Square Garden despite Tamika Catchings’ 25 points.

The loss was the Fever’s worst in 74 games over two years, including playoffs, and worst in a 44-game series against New York.

Catchings’ six 3-pointers (in seven attempts) tied a franchise record. She has averaged 23.5 points over eight games in a bid for her first MVP award.

The Fever’s four other starters totaled 14 points.

The Fever scored two field goals over the final 15 minutes of the first half and fell behind 30-27 at halftime. The Liberty went on spurts of 10-0 in the first half, 10-1 in the third quarter and 10-0 and 9-0 in the fourth — a cumulative 39-1.

The Fever’s biggest lead, 21-14, came with two minutes left in the first quarter.

The outcome ended the Fever’s five-game winning streak and put them in peril of losing the No. 1 seed in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference playoffs. The Fever are in first place by a half-game, but the Liberty hold tiebreakers for the 34-game regular season.

Third-place Washington also owns a tiebreaker over Indiana. Atlanta is fourth, so Indiana can finish no lower than third.

The Fever are at San Antonio on Friday before closing at home Sunday against Minnesota.
