Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White was found guilty early Saturday morning of felony voter fraud charges, and the governor appointed an interim director. Court wrangling over White's fate and replacement is likely to continue, however.

The jury began deliberating after lunch Friday and returned the verdict around 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

White, the state’s chief election officer, was found guilty of six out of seven felony counts. The jury found him not guilty on a charge of fraud against a financial institution.

The charges centered around allegations that White was registered at his ex-wife's home when he voted in the May primary even though he lived at a new townhouse on the other side of Fishers, making him ineligible to run for office. He admits the mistake but denies an effort to deceive calling the incident “an honest mistake.”

White will be sentenced at a later date, possibly early to mid-week this week.

A guilty verdict means that Charlie White can no longer serve as secretary of state, but there will be a fight over his replacement and who picks that replacement.

The normal chain of events would call for Gov. Mitch Daniels to fill the vacancy, and Daniels, a Republican, would almost certainly choose another Republican.

However, it's likely Democrats will turn to the courts in an effort to prevent a Daniels selection. That's because a Democratic Party challenge to White's election has already produced a ruling from Judge Louis Rosenberg that calls for the Republican White to be removed and replaced by the second place finisher in the 2010 election, Democrat Vop Osili, who now serves on the Indianapolis City County Council.

Rosenberg's ruling is on hold by order of the state Supreme Court. And it is the Supreme Court that will likely decide how White's replacement will be chosen.

In addition, White's attorneys said they would attempt to get the original felony criminal charges reduced to misdemeanors, in which case a guilty verdict would not mean automatic removal from office for White.

For the time being, however, White has been removed from office, at least temporarily. In response to the verdict, Daniels appointed Jerry Bonnett as interim secretary of state. Bonnett has worked in the secretary of state's office since 2005, Daniels said, and was most recently serving as chief deputy.

Bonnett, a Yorktown native, would "provide the effective supervision and oversight" needed in "an exceptionally busy time in the secretary of state’s office as signatures for president, U.S. Senate and governor are being certified this month," Daniels said.

Bonnett has agreed to serve until Daniels either selects someone else to serve the remainder of the current term or until the White is reinstated, the governor said.

A central Indiana prosecutor doesn't want to give a 10-year-old girl her piggy bank back.

The Reporter-Times of Martinsville reported that Morgan County Prosecutor Steve Sonnega has filed a motion asking a Superior Court judge in the central Indiana county to reverse his order to give the piggy bank back to the daughter of Russell Hill.

On Jan. 18, members of the Indiana State Police and Indiana Gaming Commission raided Hill's home in rural Morgan County.

The 63-year-old is charged with professional gambling and promoting professional gambling, both felonies.

Sonnega said the bank is a large water bottle and that in addition to containing money, it might have evidence inside.

Hill's attorney, John Boren, told the court the bank belongs to Hill's 10-year-old daughter.

Estimates figure 24,000 outbound passengers will leave today, which is nearly 15,000 higher than a typical Monday.

Those people will help fill 178 commercial departures versus the usual 134.

The numbers are not exact since some people will leave on charters and not pass through the terminal for commercial flights.

The peak hours were expected to be from 6 through 8 this morning as more than 6,000 passengers will board planes in three hours.

The rest of the day figures to be steady at about 1,000 passengers per hour.

Airport staffers advise passengers arrive three hours before their flight because of the heavy volume of departures.

The New York Giants have again taken a Super Bowl victory away from New England.

Ahmad Bradshaw fell into the end zone with a six-yard touchdown run to give New York a 21-17 lead in the final minute and the Giants held on through a tipped Hail Mary pass on the final play to win Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning was named Super Bowl MVP for the second time in his career. He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win.

Manning also was the MVP in 2008, when he threw a scoring pass in the final minute to help New York upset New England and ruin the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.

Manning now is one of only five players in NFL history with multiple Super Bowl MVP awards.

Tom Brady threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, but had a deep pass intercepted by Giants' lineman Chase Blackburn early in the fourth quarter.

Manning drove the Giants into Patriots' territory with the opening drive of the game, but was sacked on third-and-13, and were forced to punt. On the first play from scrimmage for New England, Tom Brady threw incomplete from his own end zone. After an officials' conference, referee John Parry threw a flag for intentional grounding and a 2-0 New York lead.

The safety was the first in a Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXV, when Buffalo Bills' lineman Bruce Smith sacked Giants' quarterback Jeff Hostetler in the end zone.

On the ensuing possession, Manning completed a pass to Victor Cruz, who appeared to have the ball stripped and recovered by the Patriots, but New England had 12 men on the field, giving the Giants a first down. Two plays later, Manning connected with Cruz in the end zone for a 9-0 lead.

Steven Gostkowski put the Patriots on the board early in the second quarter, capping a 60-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal, making it 9-3 New York.

After Terre Haute native Steve Weatherford pinned New England on their own four-yard line with a punt, Tom Brady drove the Patriots 96 yards, taking a 10-9 lead with a four-yard touchdown pass to Danny Woodhead with eight seconds left in the half.

After receiving the second half kickoff, Brady marched the Patriots 79 yards in 3:40, extending the lead to 17-9 with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez.

Lawrence Tynes, who kicked the Giants into the Super Bowl in overtime of the NFC Championship Game against San Francisco, converted a 38-yard field goal to bring New York back within 17-12.

A second Tynes field goal made it 17-15 New England with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a six-yard run with 57 seconds remaining to give New York a 21-17 lead. His teammates tried to get him to stop to spend more clock, but he lost his balance and fell backwards over the goal line.

Manning said, "I was yelling to him, `Don't score, don't score. He tried to stop, but he fell into the end zone."

Manning led six comeback victories during the season and set an NFL record with 15 fourth-quarter touchdown passes. He showed that brilliance in the clutch on the winning drive. He completed five passes, including a sensational 38-yard sideline catch by Mario Manningham to open the drive.

Brady took a sack on the final drive that burned New England's final timeout, but still completed two passes to set up the desperation heave that was nearly tipped into the outstretched hands of tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The city's first opportunity to host a Super Bowl went off without a hitch, and it was hard to imagine what could have been done better.

The weather was perfect, well above average for February. The planning was well-executed. The spirit of the city impressed visitors, and there were few arrests or problems associated with the big game.

National media members began talking up Indianapolis' performance early last week, and the praise built to a crescendo late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Many originally thought Super Bowl XLVI would be Indianapolis' only experience hosting the big game, but it's clear that sentiment is strongly in favor of a return trip to Indiana.

Indianapolis will again host the NFL Combine in a few weeks, so many of the same writers will be back soon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Jose Navarro injured his right elbow in Wednesday night's at Kilroy's, a downtown bar.

The Indianapolis Star reports 22-year-old Austin Glenn of Indianapolis faces preliminarily charges of disorderly conduct, battery and battery with injury to a police officer.

Police said Glenn got upset when a man cut in front of him in the line to the bar's bathroom and began swinging at him and a second man.

When Navarro tried to take Glenn down, police said Glenn instead pulled the officer to the ground, causing Navarro to land on his elbow. Navarro was hospitalized but did not break any bones in his fall.

Indiana is the first Rust Belt state to enact the contentious right-to-work labor law prohibiting labor contracts that require workers to pay union representation fees, after Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the bill Wednesday afternoon.

The Senate approved the measure a few hours earlier Wednesday, following weeks of discord that saw House Democrats boycott the Legislature and thousands of protesters gather at the Statehouse.

Indiana will be the first state in a decade to enact a right-to-work law, although few states with legislation in place boast Indiana's union clout, borne of a long manufacturing legacy. Oklahoma, with its rural-based economy that produces comparatively fewer union jobs than Indiana, was the last state to pass right-to-work legislation, in 2001.

The move is likely to embolden national right-to-work advocates who have unsuccessfully pushed the measure in other states following a Republican sweep of statehouses in 2010.

Passage of the law will close one chapter in a contentious debate that sparked a five-week walkout by outnumbered House Democrats last year and saw them stage numerous boycotts this session, delaying action on other bills and threatening to spill over into Sunday's Super Bowl.

The Republican-controlled Senate approved the bill in a 28-22 vote Wednesday morning.
