Federal and local authorities surrounded a home on Indianapolis’ near-east side early Wednesday morning in a raid of a motorcycle club that the U.S. Attorney’s Office called “the largest federal bust of alleged gang activity in Indianapolis’ history.”

FBI agents and Indianapolis police officers surrounded a home at 305 Jefferson Ave., the home of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club.

SWAT members were at the clubhouse earlier in the morning, making way for FBI agents and officers to make entry.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference to “discuss this morning’s organized crime takedown, a historic operation that involved more than 300 federal and local law enforcement agents.”

The Outlaws club has several chapters in the U.S. and across the world. According to its website, the Outlaws are in 19 states, including chapters in Fort Wayne and Gary.

There have been frequent raids of Outlaws chapters in other cities in recent years, most of them drug-related.

In 2004, the former leader of the organization — James “Frank” Wheeler, of Indianapolis — was convicted of racketeering and drug charges and sentenced to life in prison.
