• Early 2 run homer lead Paw Sox over Tribe

    June 28, 2011 No comments

Second baseman Nate Spears blasted a two-run home run in the second inning and left fielder Matt Sheely came through with a clutch two-run single in the fourth, while three Paw Sox pitchers scattered nine hits and held the Tribe to one run to lead the Pawtucket Red Sox over the Indianapolis Indians 4-1 on Monday night at Victory Field.

Pawtucket powered out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when 1B Hector Luna drew a walk and traveled along on Spears’ shot over the fence in right.

The Tribe cut the deficit in half in the following inning when with two outs LF John Bowker blasted a solo shot to right field.  The homer for Bowker was his second in as many days.

The Red Sox would tack on another two-run rally in the fourth to extend their advantage to 4-1 as they loaded the bases before Sheely drove in a pair with a single to left.

This would be all the offense that the Paw Sox would put together as the Indians held them hitless over the final five innings.  However, it would be all Pawtucket would need as starter Tony Pena and relievers Hideki Okajima and Blake Maxwell held the Tribe to just a single tally.

Pena worked out of a first inning jam and went on to toss five solid innings to earn the victory and improve to 6-3 on the season.  Okajima and Maxwell then combined for four scoreless innings of relief with Maxwell notching his first save.

Tribe starter Justin Wilson failed to become the International League’s first ten-game winner as he suffered the loss to fall to 9-5 on the season.  Following Wilson, Tribe relievers Cesar Valdez and Donnie Veal combined for three perfect innings of relief.

Indianapolis now heads on the road for six games beginning with a four-game series in Syracuse, which gets underway on tonight night at 7:00 p.m. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the start in the series opener for the Tribe, while the Chiefs are expected to counter with RHP Craig Stammen.
