UPDATE: The asphalt area that was damaged with gasoline from the tanker spill is going to be removed and repaved prior to opening the ramp. Road construction authorities performing the repair anticipate the ramp being closed through at least the evening rush hour if not longer. The Indiana State Police have completed the investigation at the scene.

The driver of a semitrailer fuel tanker was killed early this morning after his truck slammed into a concrete barrier and overturned.

The accident happened just after 12:30 a.m. on the northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 465 from Crawfordsville Road in Speedway and led to the closing of the ramp. Officials say this morning that they hoped to have the interchange open again by noon.

The crash caused about 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline to leak out into a nearby ditch, although the total capacity of the tanker was 20,000 gallons.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Rich Myers said that the tanker somehow lost control and hit a concrete barrier set up along the shoulder of the entrance ramp. The impact caused the truck to flip over, crushing the cab and killing the driver inside.

Police have not yet released the man’s identity.

The truck was loaded with fuel to be delivered to a Thornton’s gas station, and firefighters estimated 3,000 gallons leaked into a nearby ditch. Remediation experts worked this morning to drain the rest of the fuel and safely transport it away from the scene.

Drivers were being urged to avoid the area by taking detours up High School Road to 38th Street.
