• Crossroads Classic Set

The Crossroads Classic will begin in December 2011 and feature the state’s top four men’s basketball programs with hopes that it will become a holiday tradition. The agreement for the series is for two years to gauge public support.

The inaugural event will be played Dec. 17, 2011, at Conseco Fieldhouse and feature IU-Notre Dame in the first game, followed by Butler-Purdue. The second year, on Dec. 15, 2012, IU will play Butler, and Purdue will face Notre Dame.

IU athletic director Fred Glass said it’s possible IU and Purdue could meet in the future if the contract is renewed and the schools are scheduled to meet only once in Big Ten play. He added he didn’t expect that to happen for a decade.

Glass also said IU pushed to play Notre Dame in 2011 because Butler and IU are exploring a nonconference game next season as well.
The event enables IU and Purdue to play a game each season in Indianapolis.

Burke said the doubleheader would replace Purdue’s participation in the Wooden Tradition, which is moving to the West Coast this year. IU used to host the Hoosier Classic in late December in Indianapolis, but that event ended in 2001.

IU pulled the plug following a 66-64 loss to Butler, Indiana’s only loss in the event’s 20-year history.
