Contentious salary ordinance passes first reading
January 27, 2012 1 commentsAt last night’s town council meeting in Brownsburg, ordinance 2012-02 was under the new items for consideration. That ordinance was for amending another ordinance – 2011-27 – relating to the 2012 Salary Ordinance.
This was first reading and was a bit confusing to some in audience who may not have understood that the ordinance amendment included an increase in the paycheck to Board and Commission volunteers.
When Council President Dwayne Sawyer asked for a motion for the ordinance, Councilman Richardson moved for approval with Councilman Don Spencer seconding. When Sawyer asked for discussion, Councilman Rob Kendall spoke up, saying he was opposed to the pay increase for Board and Commission members until a source of funding could be found.
Councilman Gary Hood also opposed the amendment but went further to say all pay increases for the town departments or employees not to exceed 1.5%. A motion was called for Councilman Hood’s proposal which failed.
Ordinance 2012-02 was then passed 3 to 2 with Councilman Hood and Kendall being the opposers. This was the first reading for the ordinance and the meeting ended with Councilman Richardson making a comment on the proposed increase for Boards and Commissions volunteers calling it “not pay but a reimbursement”.

I agreee with Councilman Richardson re. pay for Boards & Comm's members - it is a "reimbursement".
