A Brownsburg man was in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital Tuesday night after the recreational vehicle he was driving was struck by an 89-car freight train.

71 year old Stephen Stapp was ejected from the vehicle and was found lying in the grass on the north side of the tracks, about 50 feet east of North Jefferson Street, according to a Brownsburg Police Department news release.

The RV was stopped on the train tracks in the 100 block of North Jefferson, facing north, when the eastbound CSX train struck the driver’s side shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The train came to a stop near the crossing at Odell Street, about four blocks from the crash scene, officials said. Stapp was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Lt. Stephanie Martindale, spokeswoman for the Brownsburg Fire Territory, said emergency workers were monitoring the scene Tuesday night because of concern that propane gas might be leaking from the RV.

Brownsburg police and CSX officials were conducting a joint investigation of the crash.
