The Indiana Civil Rights Commission will lead more than 50 Indianapolis residents, and more than half a dozen local organizations, in the Third Annual Dr. King Day of Service Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Watkins Park Family Center in Indianapolis. The event looks to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy by increasing economic opportunities through service and volunteer activities.

“As the need for service continues to grow, we take time to honor Dr. King by giving back and making an impact on our local community,” said Jamal L. Smith, the Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. “Throughout the year, we are seeing Hoosiers use the power of service to strengthen their own and each other’s economic security and making a real difference in our local communities.”

The Third Annual Dr. King Day of Service will include indoor and outdoor projects along Dr. King Street and Edgemont Avenue. There will also be work done at the Naval Armory in preparation for the Northwest Area Quality of Life Plan Visionary Summit on Saturday, January 18, 2014. The Quality of Life Plan (QOL) is developed by citizens that live, work, worship and play in a specific area or community.

“As more families and communities need assistance, we are accepting the challenge put forth by Dr. King to make a difference,” added Smith. “Through the efforts of our volunteers and partnering organizations we are working to revitalize Dr. King Street one project at a time. Our work with a local business incubator is especially exciting as we have the opportunity to make an economic impact on the local economy in addition to improving the appearance of the neighborhood.”
