Thursday evening around 11:50, Indiana State Police Region III Dispatch Center notified troopers of a possible impaired driver westbound on Interstate 70 near the 29 mile marker. The ISP dispatch center received the information from a citizen who dialed 911 and reported the westbound white passenger car operating very erratically.
ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie located the vehicle westbound I-70 near the 23mm, just west of exit 23 (23mm). The white 1999 Chevrolet passenger car was following a tractor-trailer too closely and traveled left of center and off on the shoulder multiple times. Trooper Cumbie stopped the vehicle and the driver smelled of alcohol and displayed classic signs of intoxication. The driver reportedly was trying to drive home to Spencer, Indiana, was nearly 20 miles west of exit to Spencer, and did not know his location at time of arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Jail where he tested .10% BAC.
Arrested: James L. Campbell, age 44, of Spencer, IN.
Charge: Operating Vehicle While Intoxicated (misdemeanor)
Traffic Citations (infraction)
Assisting was ISP Trooper Michael Featherling.
The Indiana State Police would remind motorists of the importance of dialing 911 and providing troopers with erratic driver information in “real time”. Citizens should not underestimate the role they play in public safety by reporting potential dangerous activity to law enforcement via 911.
