• Chiefs score late to beat Tribe

The Syracuse Chiefs plated two, two-out runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by a game-winning two-out, two-run base hit by right fielder Leonard Davis in the eighth as the Chiefs went on to rally past the Indianapolis Indians 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.

Indianapolis starter Jeremy Powell was dominant over the first six frames of the contest as he held the Chiefs to no runs on just three hits. However, the Chiefs would finally get to Powell in the seventh as 1B Jason Botts led off the frame with a base hit, moved to second on a balk and came around to score when Davis and CF Michael Martinez each came up with two-out base knocks to even the score at 2-2.

Botts also began what turned out to be the game-winning rally one frame later when, following back-to-back strikeouts, he lined a soft single to left, moved to second on a single and came plateward Davis’ eventual game-winning 2-run single to left.

The Chiefs rallied back from a 2-0 deficit after Indianapolis jumped out to an early advantage with single tallies in the third and sixth.

3B Akinori Iwamura sparked the Tribe’s third inning scoring rally when he drew a one-out walk and came around to score when CF Alex Presley ripped his fifth triple of the season to right field. The Indians then extended their advantage in the sixth when RF Brandon Moss and 1B John Bowker led off the frame with back-to-back base hits and Moss eventually trotted home on a Tribe double play.

Syracuse starter Jordan Zimmermann did not figure in the final decision despite allowing just one run on six hits over five strong innings of work. Instead, right-hander Jason Bergmann earned the victory in relief of Zimmermann to improve to 6-3 on the season, before Adam Carr finished off the contest notching his fourth save.

Tribe reliever Chris Jakubauskas suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 after allowing two runs on two hits in a single frame of work.

Indianapolis will wrap up its four-game series with Syracuse tonight at 7:00 p.m. RHP Joe Martinez is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while RHP Shairon Martis is the probable starter for the Chiefs.
