• Chasteen’s RBI single sends Orioles to State Championship game

Haleigh Chasteen had already given Avon seven innings of one-run pitching in the softball semistate championship against Pendleton Heights Saturday.

Trouble was, that wasn’t quite enough. It would take Chasteen’s bat to put Avon over the top in the seventh.

Chasteen’s walk-off single up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs gave Avon a 2-1 win Saturday night at Bedford North Lawrence, sending the Orioles to the state finals.

Avon was no-hit by Pendleton Heights senior Jessica Cates until the bottom of the fifth.

Pendleton Heights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning when Krosley Ogden singled, stole second and scored on Alyssa Hathcoat’s single.

Pendleton Heights had a chance to extend its lead with two runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but couldn’t capitalize.

That left the door open for Avon.

Avon’s rally began when Mackenzie Johnston walked on four pitches to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

Kaitlin Bell reached on an error. Avon’s Taylar Kelso popped out. Breanne Lahart delivered a hit, scoring pinch runner Brooke Hart with the tying run. Riley Larkin walked on four pitches to load the bases, but Allison Bexell grounded into a force out at home. That brought up Chasteen.

Chasteen, who bats cleanup, was 1-for-2 with two walks leading up to her seventh inning at bat.

But there was no pitching around her with the bases loaded and the game on the line and Chasteen delivered with the walk-off RBI Single.

Avon will face Carmel for the Class 4A state title this Saturday at 7:30 PM at Ben Davis High School.
