ESPN is reporting that Butler will officially announce that they are joining the Atlantic 10 for the 2013-14 season today. The University has scheduled a press conference at Noon.

Quoting a source with “direct knowledge of the negotiation process,” ESPN said the Bulldogs will leave the Horizon League in all sports, with the exception of football, and join the A-10, replacing Temple as the league’s 14th member.

Butler’s football team would remain in the non-scholarship Division-I FCS Pioneer League.

Switching leagues would reunite Butler with some old rivals from its Midwestern Collegiate Conference days including Dayton, Duquesne, Saint Louis and Xavier.

The rest of the league includes strong members UMass, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s and Saint Bonaventure, as well as Rhode Island, George Washington, La Salle and Fordham.

Butler coaches met Monday with athletic director Barry Collier, though Collier declined to comment on what was discussed.
