• Bulls edge Tribe 1-0

Indianapolis Indians left hander Brian Burres threw a quality start for the Tribe yesterday afternoon in game three of their four game series with Durham at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. But of the 95 pitches Burres threw, it was a lone fastball to Bulls right fielder Justin Ruggiano in the first inning that Ruggiano deposited over the right field wall for a solo home run that proved to be the difference as Durham defeated Indianapolis 1-0.

Both starting pitchers proved to be on their game. After the Ruggiano homer, Burres went on to blank the Bulls allowing only 3 hits while striking out 5 before giving way to reliever Tony Watson who set down the side in order in the bottom of the eighth while striking out a pair.

But Bulls starter Alex Cobb did Burres one better by shutting out the Tribe though six innings of work giving up only four hits and striking out five. J.P. Howell and Jake McGee finished the shutout for Durham allowing only a single hit while striking out six between the two relievers over the final three innings.

With hits difficult to come by for both teams, only Tribe second baseman Chase d’Arnaud recorded multiple hits in the game as d’Arnaud went two for three on the day.

The closest the Tribe would get to scoring would be in the bottom of the sixth as Corey Wimberly led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a Pedro Ciriaco sacrifice bunt. After Alex Presley struck out for the second out of the inning, Wimberly stole third to put the tying run 90 feet away with two out and Indians first baseman Matt Hague at the plate. But a routine grounder to third would end the only serious threat the Indians mounted in the game.

For Burres the loss dropped the left hander to 1-5 on the season while Cobb notched his fourth win of the year against zero defeats. McGee recorded his first save of the year for the Bulls.

The Indians now wrap up the season series with the Bulls tonight at 7:05 p.m. in Durham. LHP Garrett Olson is expected to take the mound for Indianapolis, while LHP Alex Torres will look to give the Bulls the series victory.
