Brownsburg’s Stephanie Mavunga had eight points and five assists Monday, helping the USA Basketball Women’s Under 16 National team to a 71-53 victory over Brazil in the opening round of the FIBA Americas Under 16 Championship in Merida, Mexico. The USA faces Argentina, which opened with a 38-37 loss to Canada, today. The top two teams in each of the four-team pools advance to the medal round. The gold medal game is scheduled for Saturday.

Mavunga said after a U.S. exhibition victory over Mexico on Sunday.”This is the experience of a lifetime. I’ve never been with so many talented girls on the same team. The chance to go out there and play with the three letters ‘USA’ on our jersey, that’s just surreal. I’m really blessed.”

Mavunga averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.4 blocks for the 20-5 Bulldogs last season as a sophomore. The games will be streamed live at fibaamericas.com.
