• Bulldogs and Orioles to Meet Friday in Second Round of Sectionals

    October 25, 2010 No comments

The Brownsburg Bulldogs and Avon Orioles both won their opening round games last Friday night as Sectional play began in the 2010 IHSAA football playoffs. The payoff is a second round matchup pitting the two long time rivals against each other this Friday night at Roark Stadium at Brownsburg High School.

But the road to this Friday’s game took different paths for each School.

It took overtime for the Brownsburg Bulldogs to beat Terre Haute South 28-21 in a game that saw the Bulldogs turn the ball over five times, miss an extra point and also miss a field goal. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions leading to 21 Braves Points as Terre Haute South led Brownsburg 21-0 early in the second quarter. Iassac Beverstock scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns midway through the second quarter and Beaverstock scored again before halftime as the Bulldogs went in to the locker room at halftime trailing 21-13.

The Bulldog defense clamped down on the Braves after Terre Haute South scored their third touchdown and limited the Braves to 40 yards total offense in the second half.

But it took a last minute score and two-point conversion for Brownsburg to tie the game as Beaverstock ran it in for his third touchdown and Bulldog quarterback Robbie Robbins ran it in on a keeper to convert the two point try and tie the game with a minute left to go in regulation.

Brownsburg got the ball first in the overtime period and Robbins scored on the second play of the series to put the Bulldogs up 28-21. The defense stepped up on the Braves possession and the Bulldogs came away the victory.

Avon’s road was considerably less bumpy as they defeated Arsenal Tech Friday night 56-12.  Charles Davis rushed for 3 touchdowns and the Orioles scored touchdowns on six of their first seven drives to take a 42-6 halftime lead and were never threatened. Davis finished the game with 11 carries for 104 yards while Jordan Shirrell added 97 yards on the ground as well.

The Bulldogs will enter this week’s sectional game looking for some measure of payback. The Orioles handed the Bulldogs their first loss of this season in a 38-17 final at Roark Stadium back on September 17th.

The Bulldogs and the Orioles played last year in the Sectional Championship game that saw Brownsburg beat Avon 42-14 at Avon.
