• Brownsburg school board recognizes BHS senior for accomplishment

Brownsburg High School senior Adam Burtner was recognized at a recent Brownsburg School Board meeting for his election this year to Boys Nation.

It’s the second time in two years the board has recognized such an accomplishment by a Brownsburg High student, according to Donna Petraits, the school district’s spokeswoman.

The Brownsburg American Legion this year selected Burtner as a representative to Boys State, hosted over the summer by Trine University in Angola, Ind. Then, Burtner was elected by his peers to represent Indiana as one of two state senators to Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., in July.

Luke Huston, a 2012 Brownsburg High graduate, was the first Brownsburg student to be elected to Boys Nation in 2011. According to the American Legion, it is rare that two students from the same school would be elected in back-to-back years.

By assuming the role of U.S. senator from their state, students assemble in caucuses, organize into committees, write and introduce legislation, debate on the Senate floor, and draft party platforms, Petraits said.

Students also attend lectures, visit historical sites and enjoy a private reception with the president.
