    September 12, 2012 No comments

Brownsburg High School senior Adam Burtner, was commended at Monday night’s Board meeting for his election to Boys’ Nation, the second time in two years the Board has had the opportunity to recognize such an accomplishment by a Brownsburg High School student.

Burtner was selected by the Brownsburg American Legion in the Spring of 2012, as a representative to Boys’ State which is hosted by Trine University during the summer.  After a vigorous campaign, Adam was elected by his peers to represent Indiana as one of two state senators to Boys’ Nation in Washington, DC.

Luke Huston, a 2012 Brownsburg High School graduate, was the first Brownsburg student representative to be elected to Boys’ Nation in 2011 and was recognized by the Brownsburg Community School District School Board for that accomplishment. According to the American Legion, it is unprecedented that two students from the same school would be elected in back-to-back years.

Sponsored by the American Legion, this prestigious civic training mirrors the legislative branch of the federal government. By assuming the role of U.S. Senator from their state, student’s caucus, organize into committees, write and introduce legislation, debate on the Senate floor, and even draft party platforms. In addition, students attend lectures, visit historical sites and enjoy a private reception with the president.
