• Brownsburg Challenger Learning Center will close at the end of the school year

The Brownsburg Community School Corporation board has voted to cease operation of the Challenger Learning Center at the end of the current school year.

The district says the center has incurred a deficit of $2.4 million since 2002.

The district said state and local legislation that trimmed the schools’ budget left it with little choice but to close the center, which has run a deficit for 10 years.

Other schools had helped foot the bill, but have less ability to do that now because of funding reductions.

Challenger Learning Center opened in 1994 and is one of about 50 similar centers built to honor the crew that died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle explosion.

The learning center featured interactive experiences that integrate science, technology, engineering and math with life skills of teamwork, decision-making and critical thinking. It serves grades 5 through 12.

A spokeswoman says Brownsburg students paid over $21,000 in fees in 2012 in an effort to subsidize and keep the Challenger Learning Center open.

Challenger Learning Center permanent staff will be offered other Brownsburg schools positions.
