A Bloomington man has been found guilty in a fatal boat crash on Lake Monroe that left a woman and her young grandson dead.

After two-and-a-half days of testimony 21 year old Winston Wood was found guilty of two counts of leaving the scene of a boating accident resulting in death and one count of leaving the scene of a boating accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

The June 2010 crash killed 8 year old Gage Pruitt and 51 year old Susan Collier. Collier’s husband 51 year old James Collier was injured.

Police said a bass boat being driven by James Collier, his wife and triplet grandsons collided with a 23-foot runabout being operated by then 19-year-old Wood, who had a passenger inside and was towing a wakeboarder.

James Collier testified Tuesday that no one in Wood’s boat helped him and Wood sped away from the crash.

In a civil suit that was settled in 2011, the company that insured Wood was ordered to pay $2 million to the victims’ survivors, the insurance policy limit. In return, the family agreed not to seek civil legal action against the teen.

Wood will be sentenced later this month.
