• Avon softball to play for State Championship Saturday

    June 10, 2011 No comments

The 26-7 Avon Orioles are one win away from a softball state championship and to capture that title they will have to do it against the number one team in the state in the Carmel Greyhounds who own a record of 27-2.

These two teams tangled earlier in the season back on April 30th with Carmel slipping past the Orioles by the score of 6-5. That early season matchup might bear some fruit as it is expected that Greyhound pitching ace Katie Osborn will toe the slab for Carmel. The Orioles got a look at Osborn in their first meeting and Osborn enters the championship game with a record of 17-2 and a 0.87 ERA.

The Orioles will hand the ball to Haleigh Chasteen who has gotten the job done both pitching and at the plate this season. Chasteen enters the game with a 16-2 record and a 1.38 ERA along with a .550 batting average while driving in 29. Ally Bexell, Lauren Woodrow and Breann Lahart anchor the Oriole offensive attack with each hitting over .400 for the season. Bexell and Woodrow have driven in a combined 95 runs this season while Lahart has scored 45 runs along with 21 steals.

The Class 4A Softball State Final game will be held at Ben Davis High School tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9.
