• Avon Girls Scouts celebrate their anniversary with community service

    October 11, 2011 No comments

In celebration of their 35-year anniversary, the Avon Girls Scouts are planning to do 35 service projects to give back to the community.

Avon consists of between 50 and 60 troops.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts USA, which they are also hoping to promote. With this, the Hoosier Capital Council is trying to contact every woman who has won the top award during her time period in Girl Scouts — the Gold Award.

There are 39 girls in Avon who have won the Gold Award.

The Avon Girl Scouts service unit was created in May of 1976, and they began recruiting members that fall.

As for the service projects, troop leader Desiree West said they have some plans and are searching for other ideas.

West said,”We contacted all of the principals of the schools in Avon and we asked for a wish list or something that you would like done.”

West said that White Oak specifically came back and asked for a flower garden at their front door.

They are also looking to aid Project A.N.G.E.L. and the Avon Outdoor Learning Center, among other community service projects.

Anyone with ideas or requests for service projects may call West at 272-6962 or send an e-mail to her at dawest2@yahoo.com.
