A man is in jail after a police officer was forced to open fire when he allegedly tried to hit the officer with an SUV that he carjacked.

Police say a man with a gun held up the Check N Go near Girls School and Rockville Roads after 10:00 am Thursday.

Police arrested 23 year old Todd Murphy of Indianapolis. He faces preliminary charges of robbery, criminal confinement, attempted carjacking, resisting/fleeing law enforcement, pointing a firearm, attempted battery on a police officer and carrying a handgun without a license.

He is currently being held in the Arrestee Processing Center, awaiting the filing of formal charges.

When a Metro Police officer got to the store, he saw a man holding the clerk at gunpoint. That man then pointed the gun at the officer and ran out the back door.

A second officer saw the suspect get into an SUV parked behind the building, pulled his cruiser behind it and got out. The officer says the suspect rammed the cruiser and accelerated toward the officer.

The suspect stopped and surrendered when the officer fired shots at the SUV.

A second man in the SUV was also detained but police later learned he was a carjacking victim.

No one was hit by the bullets.
