• A pair of Brownsburg youngsters to participate in Lemonade Day

    May 15, 2012 No comments

On May 19, 2012, kids around Indiana and the nation will participate in Lemonade Day—a chance for young entrepreneurs to try their hands at starting and running a business for one day. Lemonade Day is a national event occurring in cities from Maine to California. In 2011, over 65,000 kids in 30 U.S. cities participated.

On Lemonade Day, Indianapolis and surrounding counties will allow kids to set up and run their lemonade stands at local parks, on city streets, and anywhere they have permission to do so. The goal is not just for kids to make some cash, but for kids to develop their understanding of all the steps involved in the process including setting goals, planning, budgeting, finding an investor, selecting a site, advertising, building a stand, purchasing materials, running the stand, and evaluating results.

In Brownsburg, 9 year old Ricky and 6 year old Johnny Shirley plan to setup their lemonade stand at the Kroger Store on North Green Street from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They will sell “regular” lemonade, along with baked goods to support their personal goal of building a college fund. In addition, they will accept donations for the “Adopt a Platoon” program which allows civilians to send care packages to soldiers currently serving overseas. Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have a particular need for powdered lemonade because of the hot, dry conditions and because the drinking water that is not always very tasty. At the Shirley stand, people will be able to make cash donations to the “Adopt a Platoon” program or purchase powdered lemonade packets (Kool-Aid brand) for the care package. After the program, the Shirley boys will be responsible for packing up and shipping their care package. It is our hope that everyone will come by for some refreshing lemonade to encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs, and to make a donation for the “Adopt a Platoon” program while they are there.
