A record 85 films from as far away as Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Spain and Iran and as close as Canada and the United States have been submitted for the Third Annual Indiana Short Film Festival.

Formerly the Film Festival of Hendricks County, the Indiana Short Film Festival is the only event solely dedicated to short films in the Central Indiana region with a three-day event in October.

“We are extremely excited about not only the quantity but the quality of the short films submitted for this year’s festival,” said Sarah Ferguson, festival committee member. “Changing the name to the Indiana Short Film Festival really paid dividends as we received interest from independent filmmakers before doing any marketing, which never happened before.”

The event will be held Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 11-13, at The Royal Theater on the Historic Hendricks County Courthouse Square in Danville and will be open to the public. Films will be divided into nine showings with each showing lasting about two hours.

Admission to each showing will cost $5 a person, or $30 for a weekend pass to see every showing. Show times will be at 7 and 9 p.m., Oct. 11; noon, 3, 6 and 8 p.m., Oct. 12; and 1, 3 and 6 p.m., Oct. 13.

Filmmakers had until July 1 to submit entries for the event. All movies were required to be less than 40 minutes in length to qualify as a short film. A panel will determine which films make it onto the big screen during the festival as not all entries will be shown. Genres include animated, comedies, documentaries, drama, horror and more.

Special judges during the event will select their favorites with a $250 cash award given to the grand jury winner.
