The Hoosier Crossroads Conference boasts three of the state’s top girls basketball teams with Hamilton Southeastern leading the way as the #1 team in the state compiling an unblemished 14-0 record. The other two top 15 teams squared off last night as the #12 ranked Brownsburg Lady Bulldogs travelled to Lafayette to take on the sixth ranked McCutcheon Mavericks.
Brownsburg entered the contest riding a five game winning streak and coming off their third consecutive Hendricks County Tournament Championship while McCutcheon was coming off their first loss of the season though it was at the hands of the Royals last Saturday night.
Both teams fought back and forth in the first half keeping the game tight. Brownsburg held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter and it remained so as both teams headed to the locker room at the half with Bulldogs up 23-22.
But the Lady Mavericks came out of the locker room strong in the third quarter outscoring Brownsburg 14-9 in the period to take a 36-32 lead heading in to the fourth quarter.
Brownsburg answered by outscoring McCutcheon 13-8 in the final quarter to take home the 45-44 victory and move a game behind HCC leader Hamilton Southeastern
Stephanie Mavunga led all scorers with 20 points for Brownsburg (13-2). Kayle Comer scored 15 points for the Bulldogs including three – three-pointers.
McCutcheon (12-3) was led by Lakan Hasser-Smith and Amanda Neil who each scored 14 points. Neil scored 12 of her points from behind the arc.
The Bulldogs will take a six game winning streak in to their next game which will be against Zionsville next Wednesday at the Varsity Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM EST.
