Louisville used an 8-0 run to start last night’s game against 18th ranked Butler and never looked back as the Cardinals defeated the national runner-up Bulldogs 88-73 to open up the new KFC Yum! Center last night in Louisville.

The Cardinals led 41-23 at the half and despite a stronger second half performance by the Bulldogs were never seriously threatened.

Shelvin Mack led Butler with 25 points while Matt Howard had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Rakeem Buckles had a double-double for the Cardinals with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He was one of five Cardinals to score in double figures on the night along with Terrence Jennings’ 13 points, Preston Knowles and Elisha Justice’s 12 points each and Mike Marra’s 11 points.

The Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the season and will play Ball State Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
