State police are investigating a fatal crash that closed southbound lanes of I-65 overnight near the Hendricks-Marion County line.

Police say the crash, reported just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, was at the 127 mile marker, which is just south of the I-865 interchange near the 86th Street overpass.

Witnesses told State Police that a box truck carrying a variety of personal items was driving erratically, lost control and slid sideways. A semi-trailer carrying school books crashed into the box truck, and rolled off the right side of the highway into a ditch.

An Indiana State Police officer at the scene said that the box truck caught fire and its driver died at the scene. Troopers on the scene originally reported two fatalities, but later updated that information from the scene at 2:15 a.m. to clarify that just one person had died.

Police have delayed identifying the box truck’s driver.

The other driver, 50-year-old Robert Labazevych of Chicago, is in critical but stable condition at Wishard Hospital with burns to his body. State police officers said he was speaking to investigators at the hospital.

I-65 reopened to traffic just after 4:00 a.m.
